James Burge's Personal Journey Measuring Aspherical Optical Surface

James Burge | Published on 11/8/2024
James Burge - Giant Magellan TelescopeJames Burge, President, Arizona Optical Metrology LLC, and Professor Emeritus, University of Arizona, shared his expertise and persona journey characterizing aspherical optical at the October 9, 2024, meeting of the Optical Society of Southern California,  Dr Burges has led the effort to measure the surfaces of mirrors developed for the largest ground based telescopes in the world including the Giant Magellan Telescope shown here.

Here later went on to form Arizona Optical Metrology a company specializing in the design and production of CGH (computer generated holograms) used to created the required wave-front to measure aspherical optical surfaces using an interferometer.   His presentation included methods used to design and fabricate CGHs and some of the practical test methods developed to test both large and conventionally sized aspherical surface.  -Robert Cartland
