“IODC Lens Design Competitions from the last 25 years”

by
Richard C. Juergens
Cimarron Optical Consulting, Inc.

Abstract: The International Optical Design Conference (IODC) is held more or less every four years and traditionally conducts a lens design competition.   A design problem is concocted and the entrants, many of whom are the most prominent designers in the world, have about six months to work on it.  The results are presented at a special conference session and the winner is announced. The problems are deliberately designed to be impractical - no one in their right mind would claim the intellectual property rights to their design, yet this lens design challenge requires out-of-the-box thinking, often times involving an “a-ha moment” of inspiration from the lens design angels.  This talk will discuss the various problems since 1990 and show examples of some of the more interesting and outrageous design entries and winners, including what optical tidbits and principles we can take from them. The talk is non-technical and should be entertaining for lens designers and non-lens designers, alike.
