About this event
Next Generation Fiber Optic Connectors
Dr. Yang Chen, Sr. Member of Technical Staff, nanoPrecision Products
Abstract: In modern telecommunications (telecom) and data communications (datacom) networks, optical interconnects are essential to achieve ever increasing data rates exceeding 100 Gbps. Datacom, telecom, and FTTP (Fiber to the Premises) all require new fiber termination technology to reduce cost and improve performance for a massive deployment of optical fiber into our network and computer architectures. nanoPrecision Products’ (nPP) high precision forming technology is producing single-fiber and multi-fiber metallic ferrules to sub-micron tolerances, which provide connectors with extremely good performance. nPP’s novel metal ferrule and the elimination of epoxy now permits the development of novel laser-based factory termination processes, including laser end face finishing, to replace the current costly and time consuming mechanical polishing of optical fiber end faces. nPP’s precision stamped clamshell ferrule approach can also be used for a very low loss single and multi-fiber mechanical splice and cable restoration for simplified field installation and maintenance.
About our Speaker: Dr. Chen received both his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Precision Engineering from University of Science & Technology of China. Dr. Chen then graduated from Ohio State University with a Ph.D in Industrial Engineering. His research included: precision engineering, precision glass forming and high volume manufacturing. Prior to his Ph.D, he was a design engineer at Beifen-Ruili Analytical Instrument Co. Dr. Chen has authored and co-authored more than 20 journals and conference publications. He joined nanoPrecision in 2010 and is currently the product line manager for the single fiber interconnector – Ferrolder® and multifiber interconnector – FootballFerrule®
