OSSC Fellow

-Robert E. Fischer-

Robert E. Fischer is the founder and former CEO of Optics 1, Incorporated of Westlake Village, California. Optics 1 is a long-time corporate sponsor of the Optical Society of Southern California. He earned a BS and MS in Optics from the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester. Bob is currently semi-retired and a part-time consultant.

Bob has contributed both financial resources and time to the Society and the optics community.  He has developed and taught numerous courses, co-courses and authored the book, Optical Systems Design with Biljana Tadic-Galeb and Paul Yoder, now in its second edition (McGraw-Hill, 2008). Bob’s memorable and entertaining presentations at Society meetings are noted for his insight regarding optical aberrations, his list of Bloopers and Blunders in Optics, vacation photos and magic tricks! An accomplished magician, the photo below of Robert Fischer appeared in the February, 2006, OSSC Images newsletter. Bob was the featured speaker at the January 12, 2011 meeting of the Optical Society of Southern California presenting a sampling of his course materials.  Bob has generously made some of his educational materials available to the public.

Additionally, he has authored numerous technical papers covering a wide range of subjects in the field of optics. He has also chaired many SPIE conferences relating to optical design and engineering in the U.S. and Europe including Current Developments in Optical Design and Engineering that has been part of the Annual Meeting for nearly 10 years. Bob was also Technical Program Chair of the 1980 International Lens Design Conference. Since 1978, he has taught SPIE short courses on optical design and engineering, optical design for the infrared, optics for head mounted displays, and in other related topics. Fischer also has chaired and served on SPIE committees including the Symposia Committee, Membership Committee, Scholarship Committee, Awards Committee, and the President’s Advisory Committee. He was also Treasurer of the SPIE.

Robert E. Fischer was awarded the SPIE Gold Medal for the year 2000, the Society's highest technical honor. And in 1986 he won the SPIE Albert M.
